The modern world is moving forward, opening new vistas in science. Now one of them is robotics. The scariest robots, cyborgs, androids appeared on cinema screens. And most of them in the public mind, they were perceived as aggressors. Is it all true?
1. The Origin
The word “robot” is essentially Slavic origin. It was formed from the Czech “robot”. The author is Karel Capek. But he is not a researcher. In fact, this word sounded in his play “R. U. R.”. The robot’s called synthetic human servants non mechanical nature.
The first who tried to deal with the androids was Japanese Hiroshi Ishiguro. He specialize to build such robots that are as similar to humans: realistic appearance, fine facial expressions, voice. He called them “geminoid” (from lat. Geminis — Gemini).
His dream is to own a remote-controlled robot, which would be every self-respecting person. This idea is compared with the fantastic movie “Surrogates”. Moreover — the consultant of the film was just Ishiguro.
Fun and highly explosive case can be called such a trick Ishiguro, who tried to send his Android in his place to lecture. The robot, of course not missed the plane, what really upset his master.
3. Sinister valley
Fear of humanoid robots studied Japanese researcher Masahiro Mori. It was he who in 1978 discovered an empirical law, known as the “Uncanny Valley”. According to the results of his survey, he found that the more a robot looks human, the more attractive it seems to us — but only to a certain point. The robot is very similar to human, but has various flaws, scares people, because one gets the feeling that before us is a half-dead zombie.
The decline in the graph of attraction, which was constructed by the researcher, called “Scary valley.” This behavior creates a problem for developers of humanoid robots. They have only two choices: to make robots do not really look like a man, for example, the French robot PJSC, or to make high-quality androids.
4. Soft robots
As a result of the problems described above, one of the buzz areas of modern robotics have become soft robots. No, they are not made of wool. This is a robot with soft body parts, e.g. robot caterpillar. But to create such robots will take time. You need to bring the small gear to the original, the living, and will also require the use of unusual materials: plastic, rubber, and even the alloy with a memory effect.
5. Robot soccer
Robots with time really starting to seem like people, but also to adopt their hobby. Thus, there was the Association of robot soccer, which aims to proclaim the victory of the team of robots over humans in 2050. But until this year was still far away, and while the regular Championships of robotic soccer players look very funny and cute. The players move very slowly, constantly stumbles, dropping each other like little children. But they do it completely offline, and it can already be called a major success.
6. Home robot
A big development in recent years has been two-handed domestic robot companies from Willow Garage. Is it decently — 400 thousand dollars. In 2011, 11 of these robots went in the contest in leading institutions of the world where developments were open to all comers. In the end, the robot taught to fetch beer from the fridge, open the door, ride the Elevator, play Billiards, and what you would expect from gifted students. Stood out from all the robot is programmed to Institute Berkeley (CA). Their robot can neatly fold and tuck the towel, but it takes him 25 minutes.
7. Robots in society
Robots are increasingly becoming accessible to the public. Recently, the company “Robotics without borders” has presented a new robot — analogue of the PR2. It costs only 35 thousand dollars. However, he has only one hand and it is made of cheaper funds. Remains an important question. Why then do we need it?
In connection with the release of robots to the masses, it will soon be possible to develop software for them. So, for the last 5 years began to have a special operating system for robots ROS, Urbi, NAO OS. They are usually based on Linux. Scary and amazing is that they include modules on vision, speech, interaction with the mechanics of the robot. Appear and special applications for robot AppStore and Google Market. You only have to buy your home a “pet”.
Soon, the robot market will invest a lot of money, because this is a new stage and possibly a technological revolution! So, according to some CEO Mail.Ru Dmitry Grishin plans to invest $ 25 million in robotic companies. He has already invested in several companies.
